Iowa Talks broadcasts set for Fridays in
January
WSUI continues its Iowa Talks Live from the Java House
program this month. Highlights include a presentation by World War
II veterans, a preview of the Shadow's Child production
coming to Hancher Auditorium, and performances by two renowned Iowa
musicians.
WSUI AM 910, the University of Iowa's public radio station,
broadcasts the program at 10 a.m. Fridays from the coffee house at
211 E. Washington St. The shows are repeated the same evening at 10
p.m.
Hosted by Ben Kieffer, the show combines live local music with
lively talk about contemporary arts, community, scientific, and
cultural issues. The live Iowa Talks show is free and open to
the public at the Java House. It also is broadcast in streaming
audio on the station's web site.

Jan. 10
- Iowa blues meets Turkish folk music when blues legend Patrick
Hazell and well-known Turkish singer and composer Bahri Karacay,
also a UI research scientist in pediatrics, perform their unique
mix of world music, a result of three years of
collaboration.
Jan. 17
- Dan Knight, an internationally renowned pianist, composer, and
protégé of jazz great Dr. Billy Taylor, celebrates life as he
takes the stage for a live performance and discussion of his
recent battle with prostate cancer.
Jan. 24
- Artists from the company Urban Bush Women provide a preview of
their upcoming Hancher production Shadow's Child, which
spins the tale of a girl from Mozambique trying to fit in after
her family moves to Florida. they do this through dance, song,
puppetry, and imaginative sets and costumes. Female high school
students participating in a weeklong residency with the company
will join the artists to talk about the moving story's wider
significance.
Jan. 31
- Every day, 1,500 of the more than 19 million World War II
veterans living in the United States pass away. With this in mind,
Congress created the Veterans History Project, which seeks to
collect and preserve the oral histories of veterans. In this
broadcast, several Iowa veterans involved in the project will
recount their stories. Singer Betsy Hickok and pianist Dan Knight
will perform classic tunes from the 1940s era.
